Prof. Umberto De Sanctis is an experimental particle physicist working on the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) since 2005. His main areas of interest are: the physics of the top quark and the flavour physics. He is currently working on the measruement of the top quark mass and on the study of rare processes in the flavour sector, namely the decay of the B0 and Bs mesons in two muons.
Prof. De Sanctis worked also in several areas of high-energy physics, namely: the searches for supersymmetric particles, the performance of the Pixel Silicon Detector, the mechanisms of electro-weak symmetry breaking, the charge asymmetry of the W and the top quark production, the performance of the Level-1 topological trigger for flavour physics and the performance of the track trigger for the upgrade of the ATLAS detector for the High-Luminosity phase of LHC.
Prof. De Sanctis has been appointed, within the ATLAS Experiment, to be:
- Analysis Contact for the top quark charge asymmetry measurement (2012-2014)
- Responsible for the W/Z+jets background estimation in top analyses (2011-2014)
- Convener of the sub-group "Rare B- decays" (2015-2017)
- Convener of the Physics Group "B-physics and Light States" (2017-2019)
- Convener of the LHC Flavour WG (2020-2024)
In addition he was Deputy Physics Coordinator of ATLAS Italy in 2020 and Physics Coordinator of ATLAS Italy in 2021.
Prof. De Sanctis graduated in 2005 at the University of Milano and got his PhD diploma in the same institution in 2008. He then moved as research fellow at the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste from 2009-2012 and then as Fellow at CERN in 2012 and 2013. Finally he got a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK before moving to University of Rome-Tor Vergata as INFN researcher. He is currently Associate Professor at the University of Rome-Tor Vergata. He is also very active in the outreach sector since he was involved in the organisation of the Science Festival in Brighton, of several editions of the CERN ATLAS Masterclasses and also of stages for high-school students.
He was awarded by the Italian Physics Society (SIF) in 2006 of the prize for the "Best Communication in the 92nd SIF Congress".
I am author of about 950 papers published in peer-review journals.
