TITLE: How does the star impact the habitability of its planets?

SPEAKER: Prof. M. Lingam (Florida Institute of Technology)

ABSTRACT: Although habitability is regulated by many planetary
parameters, there is growing evidence that the host star plays a major
role in this context. I will outline the work undertaken with my
collaborators on the following topics: (i) photosynthesis on land and
oceans, and the resultant build-up of atmospheric oxygen, (ii)
atmospheric escape and desiccation of oceans mediated by stellar
winds, flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and (iii) synthesis
of vital prebiotic molecules by stellar proton events. In concluding,
I will briefly describe some of the unresolved questions and topics
that merit further study.
