Event E1.13: PROBING THE HIGH REDSHIFT UNIVERSE
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: February 10, 2012
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues, You are invited to participate in Event E1.13 of the forthcoming 39th COSPAR Scientific Assembly that deals with: PROBING THE HIGH REDSHIFT UNIVERSE This is a 2-day event held during the week of the COSPAR Scientific Assembly, which will be held in Mysore, India, from 14 to 22 July 2012. This is a follow-on event to the successful meeting held two years ago in Bremen, Germany.

The dark ages of the Universe, that followed recombination, ended when the UV radiation from the first luminous objects reionized the intergalactic medium. This epoch of reionization concluded sometime between a redshift of 6-11, and is only now beginning to be explored. Investigating the epoch of reionization is fundamentally important for understanding structure formation and cosmology as a whole, because it is during this phase that the first star-forming protogalaxies formed, enriching the intergalactic medium and possibly seeding the first black holes that would later grow into quasars. Some of the most popular probes used for exploring this early epoch include high-redshift: gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), quasars, galaxies, and Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs). This session brings together researchers who use GRBs, quasars, galaxies, and LAEs as tools for probing the early Universe. The session will also gauge direction of future research with existing, forthcoming, and proposed facilities, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA), Lobster, and Joint Astrophysics Nascent Universe Satellite (JANUS).

A list of solicited speakers includes: Choudhury, Roy Ciardi, Benedetta Comastri, Andrea Dijkstra, Mark (TBC) Ellis, Richard (TBC) Gall, Christa Illingworth, Garth (TBC) Kashikawa, Nobunari Levan, Andrew Natarajan, Priyamvada Srianand, Raghunathan Straughn, Amber Van Dokkum, Pieter (TBC) Whalen, Dan Wiklind, Tommy Willott, Chris (TBC) Yoshida, Naoki
