Young Researchers' Meeting

Rome, 3-5 May 2006

Giant squid-like creatures roam the cobbled streets

Venue

The meeting will take place at the central office of the CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche), that is located very close to the central station and to the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. To have some informations on how to get there follow the links in: http://www.cnr.it/sitocnr/Iservizi/Utilita/Sedecentrale/Comeraggiungerelasede.html (unfortunately only in Italian), or have a look at the detailed directions on the Reaching Us page.

Accommodation

Participants will be accommodated in the charming neighbourhood of San Lorenzo. Although San Lorenzo is only 15 mins walk from the main train and bus station (Termini), it is out of the traditional tourist route, and hence does not suffer from the usual rip-off merchants and crowds of middle-aged camera-bearing goons. Instead, it features a thriving student community (the University of La Sapienza is nearby) filled with cheapish restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs, and has become in recent years one of the trendiest places to hang out in Rome (as reflected by the sky-high prices of housing!).

Most people will stay in a block of apartments, which have variable numbers of rooms. They house up to six persons, and have been recently renovated. See the apartment website for details. It may be possible to stay before or after the conference as well if bookings are made soon enough. In this case, contact the organisers directly at young_res_meeting@roma2.infn.it, although you will eventually have to make the extra bookings yourself directly. The remaining participants will be housed in local hotels or apartments, depending the numbers involved.

Detailed information about exactly where you stay, and where to claim the key will be communicated to you shortly (after 11.04.06).

Detail directions of how to get about are now available on the Reaching Us page.

Download the customized map of the area now! It will be provided again in the programme, but it might be useful for those arriving a few days earlier.

Breakfast

Breakfast is not supplied at the Residence or Apartments, since these are designed for self-catering. While you could sample the traditional Italian breakfast of a "cornetto" (sweet croissant) and cappuccino at any bar nearby or on the way to the CNR centre, this might be a little "light" for some of our northern colleagues for whom dining on pig flesh and fried bread at 08:00 is the norm. Hence, it might be a good idea to buy food yourselves in supermarkets or bars the day before.

Those in hotels should also take note: the breakfast on offer is generally not much more than a coffee and a cornetto!

Note that the first coffee break is scheduled for about 10:10, where you can always grab a few biscuits.

Lunch

Unfortunately, the CNR has no facility to cater for us, so participants should eat outside in one of the many bars or trattorias nearby. Some suggestions are given in the Restaurant Guide above. Don't forget your receipts!

Dinner

Since we number about 60, and San Lorenzo does not have an abundance of huge restaurants, we recommend that you organize yourselves in smallish groups if you don't want to spend the evening walking around from door to door. Book if you can; if not, try to get there as early as you can (before 8.30).

Arrival at the CNR

The CNR like to know who is pottering about their corridors, so people are generally required to have a magnetic key card/badge. Us lowlifes can enter at the side door.

You must collect this before the conference on Wednesday 3rd morning at 08:30 outside the side door of the CNR. Please don't be late, as the meeting kicks off at 08:45.

Welcome Reception and Registration

We have organised a small "get together" at the Solea Club in San Lorenzo, address: via dei Latini 51 (junction with via dei Sabelli). It's about 15-20 mins walk from Termini station, and marked "B" on the map in the Restaurant Guide.

Time: 19:00--20:30

Most participants should prepare to register here (i.e., bring a load of cash), so they can receive their badges and programme. On registration, participants will receive a ticket for a drink and some snacks in the club.

Those who do not make it in time for the welcome party should register during the first coffee break (in the conference room itself).

Conference Fee

The fee for the conference is 200 Euro. This includes the programme, tea/coffee breaks, accommodation for three nights at the Residence or the Apartment, the welcome reception, and the conference dinner. Those staying in hotels or by their own means should pay a smaller fee of 120 Euro.

The fee should be paid in cash (Euro). Participants from Nanoquanta nodes are expected to recover this sum from their local Nanoquanta funds.

You will be contacted by email in advance of the conference if the fee changes (lowers?!)

Internet Access

This is quite difficult to arrange because of new italian anti-terrorism laws (yes, really). We will see what can be done.
